‘Friends Reunion Special’ in works on “HBO Max”
Though the mega-hit series Friends celebrates its 25th anniversary, sources told us that the six leading stars and producers of the NBC comedy of Warner Bros. TV, HBO Max, are in talks for a meeting.
A special unwritten meeting is being negotiated between Jennifer Aniston, Kourtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, as well as series producers David Crane and Marta Kaufman. Sources have warned that a deal is being made and that agreements with artists and creative people are still needed. When and if the deals are completed, the challenge solves everyone’s schedule. Of course, negotiations may fail, and the whole concept may be different.
HBO Max and producer WBTV declined to comment.
The news of a special meeting comes when Friends on Netflix has found new audiences in its broadcast home. The series will officially leave Dreamer at the end of the year and make its HBO Max debut with WarnerMedia when the $ 15 monthly subscription platform launches on the scheduled date. Sources say WarnerMedia paid Friends $ 85 million per year for five years ($ 425 million) to withdraw the transmission rights for its own platform. (Netflix, meanwhile, paid $ 80 million to $ 100 million to keep Friends in service for 2019 and was eventually abandoned by WarnerMedia).
The producer of Friends Warner Bros. TV has been busy with several programs this year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the show, replica sofas on sites around the world, Central Perk pop-ups, special theater projections of beautiful sequels and more.
Friends Reunion will immediately deliver the type of TV that needs an upstream service such as HBO Max. For example, Disney launched its streaming service on Tuesday with its highly anticipated Star Wars scripted drama The Mandalorian.
